about

The cover image for this album is a painting by my friend Traci Stover (www.tracistover.com
). All of her work is great, but this is the first image of a series of landscapes all of which capture something elusive about Mississippi.

I was once driving my mother back from visiting my brother in Orlando, and we crossed back into Mississippi during a thunderstorm in the late afternoon. She was looking out at a scrubby field beyond some vine-heavy barbed wire, a jagged dead tree out in the middle. She shuddered and said, “Oh, there’s just something about Mississippi.” We had only been in Florida for a few days. You’d have thought we’d been gone for months the way she experienced this flood of relief to cross the state line.

The funny thing is how two seconds before she spoke, I was looking at the same tree with its slashes of silver bark under the slate clouds and thinking “Oh, there’s just something about Mississippi.”

To be objective, I suppose that at that exact instant, another son was driving his mother across the Utah state line and they were both thinking “Oh, there’s just something about Utah.”

But whatever it was my mother and I saw outside the car in the rain is in Traci’s landscapes.
